As a fifth generation Kansan who has lived in the 20th district for the past 28 years and Overland Park for 31, I am committed to Kansas and the 20th district. My wife and I both received degrees from the University of Kansas. Our three children attended Blue Valley public schools and graduated from Kansas public universities – Kansas State University and the University of Kansas. My wife, Jeanne, recently retired from her work as a respiratory therapist. We have three daughters, one of whom is a teacher in the Blue Valley School District. We also have five grandchildren.
I was born and raised in Junction City, KS. My grandfather and my father both served in the Kansas House of Representatives, so I became immersed in public service at an early age. During college, I interned in Washington, DC, for Senator and Republican National Chairman Bob Dole. In 1973, I earned my Bachelor of Science in Journalism from the William Allen White School of Journalism at the University of Kansas where I served on the Student Senate and worked for the University Daily Kansan while also working to pay my way through school.
In 2015, I was appointed to the Kansas Gaming and Racing Commission. I have been a guest speaker at Blue Valley High School as part of the Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) program, and a volunteer reader in Blue Valley elementary schools.
As president of Henderson Kessinger Consulting, Inc., (HKC, Inc.) I work with companies both large and small across the United States and internationally. Henderson Kessinger Consulting was established in 1994 as a management, sales and marketing firm with a primary focus on developing managers who value each employee and salespeople who grow professionally by understanding their customers and how their products or service truly add value to the customers. My work includes helping 35 state and provincial lotteries generate increased revenues for their jurisdictions by improving retail execution and creative strategies. I have spoken at conferences and workshops across the United States and Canada as well as in Central Europe and Central America.
Prior to starting HKC, I worked for Vance Publishing, an Overland Park publishing firm where I was Sales Director and Associate Publisher of The Packer, the leading business publication for the fresh fruit and vegetable industry. For seven years, I was Western Division Manager and our family lived in the Los Angeles area. While in California, I conducted graduate studies in business at the Graziadio School of Business and Management, Pepperdine University. I completed my MBA at the Helzberg School of Management, Rockhurst University in 1988.
Our family moved to Overland Park in 1984 as I became founding publisher of ProNet, Vance Publishing’s leading edge online service for the fresh produce industry. The new venture created new jobs in Overland Park. I also was a founding member of Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church and served a three-year term as Elder.
For the past 20 years, I have been a member of the United Methodist Church of the Resurrection where I volunteer as a Congregational Care Minister. I also serve on Staff Parish, am a small group leader and have taught adult education there. I am active in developing the Global Impact missions program and training at Church of the Resurrection. In 2014, I traveled to South Africa for three weeks to serve on a mission trip to Mooiplaas, a settlement outside of Pretoria.
I bring a wide experience and knowledge in business and government, coupled with a strong commitment to family and to my faith.
